When 3 a.m Isn’t So Lonely

July 16, 2010

Last year, when my September break rolled around, I was nervous.  Through all of my breaks last year, I was nervous.  I didn’t know my son.  I didn’t know what he liked or didn’t like.  I didn’t know if I’d be able to DO this.  I wrote about my anxiety before the end of school […]

We’re all in this together, people.

June 9, 2010

I’ll say it again. WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. This sisterhood of motherhood.  TOGETHER. I am a frequent flyer at Heir to Blair and yesterday she posted an entry titled “Great Expectations”.  The post talks about how motherhood wasn’t what she expected.  That the felt lied to somehow by other mothers.  She also talks about […]

Motherhood is…

May 9, 2010

“Motherhood is love at first sight.  It’s not having any stylish clothes for yourself, but owning the entire latest line from Gymboree.  It is more difficult than the bar exam.  It’s more rewarding than a big fat paycheck.  It’s as much fun as college, just in a different way.  It’s Lullabies instead of Ludacris.  It […]

We did it. We did it for our daughters. And our so We did it. We did it for our daughters. And our sons. For LGBTQ. For Black people. For women. We did it for our future.

I woke up in a Blue state yesterday and today my COUNTRY has chosen love and hope.

Do we have work today? Yes, absolutely. And it feels like we made a start.

So, we didn't win the election. To be fair, everyo So, we didn't win the election. To be fair, everyone knew that it would be an uphill battle as a write-in campaign, but that doesn't make the loss sting less.

I won't pretend that I'm not hurt by seeing people, community leaders, who openly preach kindness laughing at my loss this morning.

I won't pretend that I'm not sad about not winning.

I wanted this because there are families out there going unheard—my own included—by our current school board. I wanted this because decisions are being made that are not in the best interest of teachers, of learning, or of protecting the health and safety of our community.

So, yes, I'm disheartened by the results, but I'm not defeated.

Throughout this campaign, however short it may have been, I've met members of this community who want to see things change, who believe that we deserve better than what we've been given. People who were willing to make donations, write postcards, send texts, make phone calls, put up signs, talk to their neighbors and friends. My gratitude to every single one of you is boundless.

I've made friends I trust will be in my life for years to come.

But most importantly, I've put "you don't get what you don't fight for" into practice and shown my children that it is always important to use our voices to speak up for what we believe in, even when it's hard. Maybe even especially when it's hard.

So, I may not have won this election, but I will never stop using my voice to stand up for others, for myself, for my family and other families like mine, for our teachers and our students. For our entire community.

This campaign may be over, but there's still work to be done. Time to go get into #goodtrouble with my @cherokeedems.
Joshua is always thinking outside the box/store fo Joshua is always thinking outside the box/store for Halloween, choosing costumes that require searching for pieces and parts all over the internet or crafting them ourselves. While this year’s #enterthegungeon pilot costume was *significantly* easier than year’s past, it was no less obscure, which is Joshua’s style.
