Yesterday is the day we almost killed each other

Almost..

There is nothing quite like boredom to draw out the cranky in two full grown adults and one not-so-full-grown child.

Because we’d done so much earlier in the week, and because I’m whiny and lazy, I asked Dan if we could have a “veg” day and he was all “Sure.”  But it’s not enjoyable when you feel compelled to be productive because you’re at home and there’s nothing else to do.  So in our attempts to “veg” we both got on each other’s nerves.  All day.

There wasn’t much happening on Twitter or the interwebs or TV (and it’s kind of impossible to watch TV with a toddler anyway) so I was bored.  I felt uncomfortable vegging because it felt like he was thinking “Gosh, she’s so lazy” all day long.

He is biologically incapable of vegging out.  Which means he radiates anxiety and is literally humming with the need to do SOMETHING.

It makes for an interesting day when one person wants to sit around and can’t and the other person doesn’t want to sit around yet feels forced to do just that.

We were both so irritated with the situation that we just got all grumpasaurus with each other and stayed that way until sometime yesterday evening.

It wasn’t fun, y’all.  Not even a little bit.

The most stressful day of this Staycation was the day when we did nothing.  Weird.

The situation was further exacerbated (there’s a five dollar word for you!) by the fact that Joshua decided to take ONE nap yesterday. At 8:30 in the morning.  Because he woke up at 6:00 a.m.  Yes, I realize that 6:00 is an hour later than 5:00, but when it’s that early in the morning, an hour doesn’t make much difference. (And yes, I know Dan let me sleep in yesterday morning but the afternoon is when Joshua gets cranky, and that’s when we all deal with the wrath of Captain Crankypants.)

8:30 is too early to take the ONE nap you’re going to take that day.

So Joshua was in a pretty rotten mood yesterday afternoon and no amount of trying was going to get him to take a second nap.  He just wasn’t having it.  (He comes by his stubbornness honestly.  Actually, he’s kind of screwed since Dan and I might be the two most stubborn people I know in the entire universe.)

So, what we all probably needed was a nice, middle of the afternoon nap.  But what none of us got was a nice, middle of the afternoon nap.

Because there were no naps, the three of us were just big balls of cranky.

However, all was not lost.  (Remember, I said “almost” killed each other!)

Joshua recovered nicely and ate a good dinner.  He played after his bath and then went down for the night with no problems.  He was so tired.

Dan and I grilled hot dogs and watched some Jeopardy and TV and read a little bit and managed to unwind, which was nice.

So yesterday wasn’t a TOTAL fail.

We woke up at 8:00 this morning because Joshua decided to sleep late.  Woohoo!  (He did have a wake-up at 3:45 and we gave him some milk, so that’s probably why he slept late.  Otherwise, I have no doubt we’d have been up at 5:00 or 6:00 this morning, too.)

Today, the plan is to clean the office.  And man, does it need a good purge.  Luckily, we have something to do and we probably won’t kill each other.  Probably.

We do, however, still have two days left of our Staycation with no set-in-stone plans, so we’ll see how it goes.
