In our old house, the most neglected room was always the master bedroom. In our new house, the most neglected room is the master bedroom.
Why?
Because this is where clean laundry comes to die, mostly, but also because it’s way more fun to decorate the loft and the kids’ rooms and the kitchen gallery wall and to daydream about what I’m going to do on the wall going up the stairs and at the end of the day I really just want to fall down dead asleep on my heating pad and dream.
When Wayfair sent out the latest Homemakers program email and the campaign was all about creating our dream master bedrooms, I thought it sounded like a great opportunity to really think about what I want this space to be.
We bought a new bed before we moved in, and I refinished two nightstands I found on a yard sale page, and then I stopped. I settled for bedding I could live with instead of something I would love. I bought sort of okay lamps. I never got a mirror to go beside the dresser.
There is nothing on any of the walls (except for a rogue sweep of a marker I feel almost certain was placed there by a well-meaning three year old who shall remain nameless). (Thank god for washable markers, amiright?)
I’ve probably spent more time than is rational or sane on Wayfair.com dreaming up a master bedroom we can love, and this is what I came up with.
Yeah. I love it.
Those nightstands are incredibly similar to what we already have. I decided to do espresso stain on the top of ours, but they’re both Bachelor’s Chests.
Fun fact: I didn’t know Bachelor’s Chests were a thing until this campaign, but that’s what those are. Nightstands with a pull-out shelf for my wine glass and drawers for my coloring books are called Bachelor’s Chests.
Blue is my favorite color, but I don’t want to overdo it with blue so it’s an accent color. It also happens to be a calming one. That’s exactly what I want my master bedroom to be. Calming. A retreat within our home where I can escape from the toys which have vomited all over the loft upstairs. I want it to be a place where I can think and read and relax and feel happy in.
You would think I would also make it a place where the laundry is put away all the time, but hey. I’m not perfect.
Any master bedroom of mine has to have a reading nook.
We have a bay(ish) window room extension thing in our master bedroom that makes the PERFECT spot for a reading nook. I could do one chair there or two.
I would have to be sure it didn’t become the laundry chair like the (old) chair currently sitting where I would like to put this beauty because this chair DESERVES to be seen. And cozied up in. This chair is practically begging me to read in it.
I love the industrial look of the side table, and the glorious thing about it is that if I got it into the bedroom and didn’t love it beside the reading chair, it’s a close match to our coffee table in the living room, so I could still use it.
I would love to have a book shelf in here because right now they’re all spilling off of my nightstand but I’m afraid if I had a book shelf in the bedroom I would find a way to put the laundry on it while sitting in my beautiful reading chair.
Ugh. Laundry. Ruiner of happiness.
